Unfortunately, acne is hereditary in my family. What’s worse is that cystic acne is the primary acne my family members struggle with. So from the age of about 13, I also struggled with the pain and embarrassment of cystic acne. Often I would only have one or two problem spots or blemishes, but as you probably know, cystic acne is deeply painful and can be very noticeable.

I am lucky to be artistic and interested in all things artistic like makeup. So as I approached my teen years I experimented with makeup more and more. I learned ways to conceal my acne. I was so good with cystic acne concealing, that if you ask my friends, they probably wouldn’t even remember that I suffered from acne at all. I feel blessed that I learned the proper way to conceal my acne. I saved myself so much embarrassment, once I learned the keys to proper acne concealing.

I do remember a few days, before I learned the best tricks, that I stayed home from school because I was so humiliated with my blemish. I don’t want anyone to have that experience. I sincerely know what it feels like to be embarrassed of your skin. You avoid eye contact at all costs, you avoid basketball games and school dances, because your face is just “out of control”.

I want to share with you a few of my time-tested tricks.

The first trick, is not a trick at all. And you’ve probably heard it before: Don’t pick. I’ll be candid – most acne sufferers tend to pick their acne. It’s gross and difficult to talk about but I want to point it out. Once I stopped touching, prodding and squeezing at my skin, my blemishes cleared up incredibly fast. Especially with cystic acne, picking a cyst does not help. The only way for a cyst to go away is for the swelling to go down. So the better fix would be:

Take an ibuprofen. This one really works. Ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling all over the body and really truly will make a difference with an acne cyst.

Place a hot wash cloth or heat pack on the cyst. In the same way ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling, heat really helps a cyst to calm.

Get a Zeno. The Zeno Acne clearing device is a targeted heat device that is medically safe and effective especially for cystic acne. I know it’s expensive. I really do, but I absolutely recommend it. It’s going to save you scarring and embarrassment. It makes your acne cyst disappear in half the time any other method would. I would not recommend this if it did not work. I’ve been duped into so many quick fix acne treatments because I was vulnerable and wanted help. This is something I truly stand behind – I personally own one. I’ve also heard from so many young women I work with as a makeup artist that it works.

Now here’s the top makeup products for concealing acne cysts.

Stick Concealer, the concealer that looks like a lipstick. It has the perfect consistency because it’s a little thicker than most concealers. It will last longer which is key for cystic acne sufferers. The concealer needs to really bind to the inflamed skin, otherwise it will slide off and you will be red and noticeable. CoverGirl and Almay have good brands of lipstick-shaped concealer. Try those.

Powder foundation – not translucent or mineral makeup. Powder foundation like Lancome’s Dual Finish powder or Clinique’s Double Face matte makeup are great. The reason a powder foundation is necessary is to seal in the concealer on top of your acne spot. Put the concealer on and then pat powder foundation over the top with a sponge. I don’t recommend using a brush to apply the powder. The patting motion will help bind the texture of the concealer to the powder. This means your makeup will stay put and you know you will be concealed for the whole day. Knowing that your face is smooth and your acne is invisible is such a confidence boost! The best powder foundation, in my opinion is Nars Powder Foundation. Nars wins many of the annual Allure awards and is one of my personal favorite brands.

A simple combo of thick concealer stick and powder foundation will really save you from a red, swollen acne cyst. Make sure you get a concealer brush. I am not one of those people who thinks you have to have a makeup brush. But when you’re working with acne, you want to be as hygienic as possible. Instead of using your bacteria-laden fingers, use a clean makeup brush. Your acne will heal much faster if you don’t flare it with dirt, oil and bacteria. My favorite is the Afterglow Vegan Concealer brush. But I’m honestly not here to push products or make you buy expensive makeup. You can very easily buy a concealer brush from Target, from Sonia Kashuk.

Here is the response from a discussion with Victor about a necklace I bought: “I would say since you purchased your necklace at a major retailer and not on a street corner or from a friend, the necklace is most surely 10k gold, just like they had said. Look for a stamp on or near the clasp part. You should see 10k or the numbers 417; both mean 10k. The numbers are the amount of gold mixed into the metal to make it 10k quality for jewelry.”

What is the main reason for the black smudges? Ok, it is gold then why does black get on you clothes? This used to be one of the great mysteries of jewelry but now the most likely reason is make-up. That means make-up like ladies wear. Make-up is ground into very fine particles and seems smooth. With a really close look with magnification, make-up has very fine particles in it. These particles act just like sandpaper on the gold!

Since the sanding action is so very fine, the particles of gold that rub off are too small to show the gold color to the eye and simply look black, like a smudge. I believe this is about 90% of the problem ladies have with gold showing smudges on skin or clothing. Seems strange but this is true!

Other reasons for the black smudges. Is, if you don’t wear make-up that could be getting on the necklace, there are some possible other reasons. The problem with these are elusive and hard to track down to one reason or the other for the smudges. If you have worn gold like this before and had no problems, it becomes sort of a detective case. Ask yourself if make-up brand has changed. Ask if any meds might have changed. Ask if you are using a hot tub or swimming in the new necklace.

We have already talked about make-up. The meds is mentioned simply because in some cases, changes in medicines can affect the body chemistry and the chemicals the necklace will contact on your skin. This can sometimes lead to smudges from a chemical reaction to the jewelry metal.

Hot tubs and pools contain chlorine and that is not only damaging to jewelry but can cause a tarnish that will then become smudges on clothing. The tarnish parts are so fine you might not notice on the necklace and general cleaning does not remove that from inside the necklace links; so, smudges can come from tarnish on the gold and get on your skin or clothing.

Salt air will also cause smudges. The chemicals in the air react with body salts and oils and stuff in the air to cause a tarnish on the gold. This tarnish will sometimes be rubbed off onto clothing as the necklace moves along the cloth.

That about covers the black smudge causes. Sometimes it is truly a mystery and I have seen it happen with 10k, 14k, 18k jewelry. My suggestion first of all is to think about what I have said and see if any changes in make-up or meds or living conditions have happened since the necklace was purchased.

If you have other 10k necklaces, do you get any smudge from them? If not, then it is some component in the new necklace causing the problem. Different manufactures use different mixes of metals to make 10k gold for jewelry. Some will work for almost everyone but once in a while a person will find smudge problems with no apparent reason.

Like I said before, I would have to believe the necklace is the gold the seller says it is. The smudges happen with all kinds of karat gold jewelry, depending on the person wearing the gold and the environment. There is no simple cure unless you get a clue from your life and my suggestions of causes.

I would suspect that then necklace is not gold or since it is stamped 10k it is a low karat gold, only 37.5% gold and the rest is what may be causing the black color. Do you get any blacj on your skin? Usually if you take the piece back to the retailer they will refund your money or give you credit for another purchase.

It is probably the alloys used for the mix in the 10k are not stable or badly alloyed and is causing the black color. The best thing to do is to take it back. Try to go up to at least 14k. If the same thing happends with the 14k then it might be that it is the makup that you are using or it is something totall different. Either way you look at it there is something wrong with the alloy or it is the makeup that you use.

It that is true then you should try out silver and see how that works out for you. You might not like the silver but if you don’t get black smuges on your cloths or skin then it might just be the gold itself or the kind of alloy.

Consider using a kaolin clay mask in addition to cleansing and shaving. Clay masks will draw out the impurities in your skin and provide a smoother surface for applying makeup. A smooth surface is the most important aspect of good looking and easy to apply makeup.

Moisturize – Dry skin will soak up your foundation fast and ruin the effects of applying makeup. Make sure to use an oil free variety. Moisturizing will provide your foundation with a base. Make sure to wait until the moisturizer is soaked into your skin before moving on to applying foundation.  If you are not allergic to scent, consider a moisturizer with a nice, feminine smell.

Apply Foundation – If you are using a liquid foundation, apply it to your hands and spread it to your face that way. Make sure to smooth foundation out with a sponge without pulling or stretching your skin, Be extra careful and gentle around your eyes where the skin is very thin.

Set your foundation with a loose powder. On hot days, foundation will require periodic touch ups.   Concealer should go on after the foundation.  You may need a heavier foundation if your facial hair tends to grow quickly.

Once these points have been plotted then you can begin marking the line along the bottom of the brow using delicate feathered strokes from inside to out so that the line is kept clean and natural, drawing a single line stroke will look more false and ‘painted’ than short, light strokes. Using a very sharp eyebrow pencil can create a very unnatural and severe look which is not attractive so it is always best to just pinch the tip of the pencil before use so that the line is kept soft, broad and natural.

Once the bottom line is in place then, using light strokes in an upward motion, you can start filling in the brows. Add more pressure to the pencil in order to define the area around the arch and use a cotton bud to smudge the edges in order to create a blended and natural shading effect. With a little bit of practise you will find that it is possible to have perfectly shaped eyebrows even if you are not blessed with a naturally dark and defined set.
